Description
Just back from PCGS! Just 5 pieces have been graded at this level by PCGS with only 18 finer (11 in AU55, 5 in AU58, and 2 in MS61; some of which are likely resubmissions). David Akers is quoted on PCGS CoinFacts as stating, “The 1863-S is very rare in any condition. In my experience this date is at least as rare as the 1863 and actually more rare in high grade. It is comparable to the 1858-S and 1860-S in overall rarity and is equally impossible to obtain in choice condition. Only one specimen as high as AU has ever been sold at public auction (PCGS CoinFacts editors’ note: as of 1980), and I have personally seen only one piece better than EF, a coin in the possession of Robert Johnson at the 1973 Boston ANA that was subsequently sold to Harry Bass. This is likely to be the finest 1863-S that you will encounter for many years. It’s the finest we’ve ever owned!
