in D
(Concert key of C)
Boxwood with Ivory Rings
English Design
Made c.1810
Superb Condition
Plays Slightly Above A=440
Offered is a rare and desirable one-key D flute (concert key of C) with 4 joints. Lowest note plays D. Made of boxwood with ivory rings and one brass key. Sounding length 21 3/8" or 544 mm. Plays slightly above A=440 and can be tuned using a plumbing washer or tuning ring. There is no makers stamp but each joint is stamped. "D' is on each joint and the number "2" on the upper joint showing there was at least one other joint originally, this being the second corps de rechange. The design appears English with a large embouchure, which appears to be original and medium size tone holes. Looks to be made c.1810. Very close in style and length to some of my Potter and Goulding flutes. The condition is excellent and near perfect with only some minor scuffs and scratches. No warping. The bore appears to be round on every joint. The crown is a replacement and made of synthetic ivory but matches very well. One crack was repaired and the tenon wrapped with carbon fiber to insure a secure repair. Just cleaned, oiled, tenons rethreaded, new leather pad and new head cork. All in all a beautiful robust player with a strong tone. This flute cuts really well. The intonation is excellent with only the usual low pitch on D and high pitch on A. Perfect for Irish or traditional music.
It does not include a case but it will be well packed with each joint wrapped and cushioned. The cardboard box can serve as a temporary case. A cleaning stick, swab and cork grease are also included.
We also have flute rolls for sale separately.
