Snapit Electric Door Chime, Model #600C
, with “
Super-Tone“ Signal
, (single coil/ single strike tone /curved plate style) manufactured in the USA, circa early 1950's, by
Marks Products Co
, Inc,
Brooklyn, NY
.
Marks Products Co. product division was later acquired by Cable Electric Products, Inc. of Providence RI, who continued to market this same model, but under the
Cable Electric
name and packaging, with modifications to the instructions, and retail box design; under as its'
own
“
Golden-Tone Door Chime” line
incorporating a different two-tone sound and design.
Common to small homes and apartments of the early 1950's era, and then promoted to replace or upgrade existing exposed-clapper/round bell style and smaller, closed-case buzzer style front door signal;, this early model Marks Products
Snapit Electric Door Chime
featured a single-strike, "super tuneful” chime, mid-century modernistic design, and was marketed as a "
do-it yourself"
home improvement. The Snapit Electric Door Chime simply wired directly into existing 6 volt DC low voltage battery-powered wiring, or could utilize an optional 16 Volt AC transformer...serving as a simple, affordable, and attractive inside home replacement/upgrade. This Mark's Products Snapit #600C single chime unit has been long-time stored in a pet-free, smoke free home.
Made of ivory-tinted Bakelite, this unit is in outstanding cosmetic condition for its' age, with no fading, scratches, chips, discoloration, or rust. The enamel wire coil with wood dowel solenoid plunger assembly is fully intact, and all inner and outer cabinet surfaces are free of blemishes, corrosion or rust.
The classic, Marks' early-build, tear-shaped, molded Bakelite body of this door chime measures
:
5 inches Tall x 3-1/4 inches Wide x 2-1/4 inches Deep, is uniform ivory in color, with its front panel featuring three highly-detailed, raised surface Carilion-style bells.. The rear surface contains a fully intact press-fit solenoid coil frame, wooden dowel plunger, enamel-insulated coil and input wires, and two brass, slotted, connection screws. No chipboard backboard is included.
The single chime bar is a single-strike, internal resonating folded type chime, made from formed steel, spot welded to a durable mounting bracket, and held stationary with a hollow-eyelet that further acts to reinforce the upper mounting hole.
For attachment, a wall-mount design features two, thru-hole, body flange-mounting holes, designed for vertical (direct on-the-wall mounting) with one screw hole at the top cabinet lip, and the other at the bottom cabinet lip, using standard slotted-head wood screws. Included with this chime are two, standard, dry-wall anchors and two screws for secure mounting to drywall or plaster walls.
The included Marks' Products original retail box is printed in a semi-gloss, orange-and-blue color scheme, and comes in the original Companies' 1950's packaging. The box face features a stencil-cut clear-view window on its' front surface. Artwork and data on the box surfaces include product information, brand-name labeling, and line drawing illustrations on several of its' six surfaces. The box exhibits age-appropriate shelf-wear from long-time storage, which is visible on listing pictures showing the various box surfaces, edges and corners. No tears, rips, or tape repairs are present. The original, inner box acetate box window has been replaced with a clear, Mylar panel.
Recommended for indoor use. Installation may require the addition of a standard, non-lit, push button door bell switch, low voltage, insulated bell wire, and a 6 volt DC power source.
Alternately, 4, common "D"-size flashlight batteries each @ 1-1/2 Volts DC, wired together in a “series” battery holder, OR a 6 Volt lantern battery, OR a 120VAC /10-16 VAC door bell transformer is required to to power and operate this chime.
Operation:
This item was fully bench-tested on 12/26/2020 with a regulated DC power supply set at 6 Volts DC, 0.5 Amps; and it test-operated correctly with a resulting single, robust, chime sound at each application of 6 Volts DC (and again at a lower 4.5 Volts DC). This signaling device is designed to operate on DC battery power of 6 Volts DC, or a 10-16 Volt AC home bell transformer.
Important Considerations:
Most modern home door bell systems now operate on 18-24 Volts AC, which too powerful to correctly operate this vintage chime.
Push button, batteries, transformer, or bell wiring are
NOT
included with this listing.
